Faceless Portraiture In the year of 1949, during the Chinese Communist Revolution, my grandfather left his hometown, Qingdao (Shandong, China), with the troops and retreated to Taiwan. He was only a teenager back then. Leaving his family behind, he thought he might be able to return home soon. Unfortunately, the ship that they were on was attacked and the entire ship went down. My grandfather was one of the few who survived and drifted on the ocean for three days prior to the arrival at Taiwan. My grandfather met my grandmother in Taiwan and started a family. Though I started this project trying to do a portrait of my grandfather and the portrayal of his life, it has developed into a portrait of the conflict that is existing throughout generations in my family. Over the past few decades, the debate on whether Taiwan belongs to China and whether Taiwan is an independent country has been a big issue that people in Mainland China and Taiwan talk about. Deep down, we know our origin, and we respect that. But at the same time, people in Taiwan also believe that we are an independent country, which is the opposite of what people in Mainland China believe. This conflict will always exist. There is no right or wrong. It is nor black or white.
